SPOTLIGHT - BOB MARLEY

In the wake of the 30th Anniversary of his death - I wanted to spotlight some of Bob Marley's music and give a little info on him you may or may not know.

Bob was a  Jamaican born (in the village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish) singer-songwriter and musician. He was the rhythm guitarist and lead singer for the ska, rocksteady and reggae band Bob Marley & The Wailers (1963–1981)
Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited with helping spread both Jamaican music and the Rastafari movement to a worldwide audience.
Marley's music was heavily influenced by the social issues of his homeland, and he is considered to have given voice to the specific political and cultural nexus of Jamaica.
The compilation album Legend (1984), released three years after his death, is reggae's best-selling album, going ten times Platinum (Diamond) in the U.S. and selling 25 million copies worldwide. (Source)

"I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white"

SPOTLIGHT! TEDDY PENDERGRASS

If you're alive - you know who Teddy Pendergrass is. But just in case you don't - I've located a very good description of his life and career.

~ The consummate African American sex symbol of the 1970s music scene, Teddy Pendergrass gained unparalleled adulation from female fans for his suggestive crooning and his women-only concerts at which teddy bears were passed out to audience members. 

Pendergrass was born in Philadelphia on March 26, 1950. His mother named him Theodore, which means "gift from God," because she had suffered six previous miscarriages. His father Jesse, who had left the family and moved in with another woman, was murdered when Pendergrass was 12. As a young man, Pendergrass was ordained as a minister and he followed a religious lifestyle. His first exposure to secular music occurred in his early teens when his mother, who worked at a Philadelphia supper club, let him play some of the club's musical instruments. Pendergrass soon taught himself to play several instruments and he joined several local musical groups in Philadelphia.

n 1969, Pendergrass received his first big break when he signed on as the drummer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, a Philadelphia soul group. When the Blue Notes' lead vocalist left the group the following year, Pendergrass replaced him and brought a new level of fame to the group. The Philadelphia soul sound pioneered by producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff during the 1970s combined a down-to-earth intensity with a more lyrical, mellow side. Pendergrass's baritone voice was vigorous, yet smooth, and was well-suited to the Philadelphia soul sound. Blue Notes hits such as "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "The Love I Lost" made Pendergrass a singing sensation and helped to launch his solo career.


Pendergrass released his debut solo album, Teddy Pendergrass, in 1977. Two singles from the album, "I Don't Love You Any More" and the ballad "The Whole Town's Laughing at Me," were modest hits. However, it was only when Pendergrass began to be marketed as a sex symbol that his career really took off. When he performed in concert, Pendergrass would launch into spectacular vocal outbursts that delighted throngs of adoring female fans. Many of these fans threw underwear on stage and reveled in his tank-top attire and seductive stage routines. Concerts were often billed as "Ladies Only" affairs and, in one notorious incident, one woman shot another after a struggle over Pendergrass's sweat-soaked head scarf.
For a time, Pendergrass was arguably the most popular male star in R&B music. However, his life would be changed forever on the night of March 18, 1982, when the brakes on his Rolls-Royce failed, causing the car to hit a metal guardrail, cross into oncoming traffic, and ram into a tree. Pendergrass suffered a broken neck, a crushed spinal cord, and damage to vital nerves. He was unconscious for eight days and, when he regained consciousness, he realized that he was paralyzed below the waist and would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.



His voice weakened by the crash but imbued with new emotional depth, Pendergrass slowly returned to work. In 1984, he released his first album since the accident. The album, Love Language, thrilled and inspired his many fans, and was certified platinum for sales of one million copies. Pendergrass made a live appearance at the Live Aid charity concert in 1985 and his 1988 album, Joy, put him back atop the R&B charts. Ron Wynn, in his review of Joy for the All-Music Guide, observed that Pendergrass "sang in a slower, somber yet appealing way quite different from the swaggering, openly sexual, macho posturing of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was a weary but not beaten Pendergrass, whose manner and delivery underscored the resilient theme in Joy's lyrics."

With the constant support of his wife and his mother, Pendergrass has far exceeded the expectations of his doctors, who had predicted that Pendergrass would live only ten years after the accident. He kept up a moderate schedule of recording and touring, releasing the albums Truly Blessed (1991), You & I (1997), and This Christmas, I'd Rather Have Love (1998), and touring with the traveling company of the gospel musical Your Arms Too Short to Box with God in 1996. He founded the Pendergrass Institute for Music and Performing Arts to assist aspiring performers, and also supported causes that championed the rights of the disabled.

The Spotlight This Week Is On Mary J Blige!

Miss Mary has been my girl since she started in the early 90ies. She has a very unique vocal sound and you know who is singing as soon as she starts. As of 2010, She has sold over 50 million albums and 15 million singles from 8 albums. She has 9 Grammy Awards for R&B, Rap, Gospel and Pop - she is the only artist to achieve that!

She was ranked number 100 in the list of 100 greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. In November 2010, Billboard Magazine ranked Blige as the most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years, she ranked number two (overall) ahead of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston who happen to be 3 of my all time favorite singers along with Madonna. These are my top 5 Female Recording Artists!

Id like to take you back in time - the 80ies!! Ohhh the 80ies had such great singers, including Prince! Just another one of the great preformers who has staying power - this man can SANG!!

SPOTLIGHT - JANET JACKSON

In the Spotlight this week we feature Janet - Miss Jackson if ya nasty! 

Ive been loving Janets music for a great number of years. She has a one of a kind voice - you know who it is as soon as she starts singing...although many people (my self included) think she sounds EXACTLY like Michael in some of her songs, example "Nothing" - in this song she really has the "MJ" sound but you still know it was Jan and not Mike!
Im taking it back to the 80ies with the video- enjoy!

SPOTLIGHT - MARIAH CAREY!

This week the Spotlight is on Mariah Carey! 

Ive loved Mizz Mariah since the early 90ies and she hasn't stopped spitting out the hit since she exploded on the scene. She  has sold more than 200 million albums making her one of the best selling recording artists of all time!

The way she looks may have changed a bit over the years but the way she sounds stayed the same - perfect! NO ONE can belt out a tune like Mariah!

SPOTLIGHT - ARETHA FRANKLIN

Since everyone seems to be paying homage to the Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin I decided I would also.

I grew up on Aretha's music, my Mother loves old Motown music and this is what was played. I love all of her music and even the covers of other peoples music are FANTASTIC!! This Woman is a legend - this is a prime example of someone who deserves to be called a Legend and an Icon.

This video is taken from Luther Vandross' funeral - this is amazing!! Even in the midst of her despair over the loss of her friend she still manges to HIT IT!!

SPOTLIGHT - KEITH SWEAT!

Keith Sweat reminds me of the 80ies as much as Michael Jackson and Madonna. I LOVE this mans voice!!! I listened to him soooo much back in the day. Whenever I hear one of his songs now it makes me smile....brings back so many memories.

Sexy!!

I still love this song to this day, I played this over and over and over when it first came out! This and "How Deep Is Your Love" - ahhhh memories :)

SPOTLIGHT: WHITNEY HOUSTON

Today in the spotlight is Ms Whitney Houston! Ive loved this lady since the early 80ies - she has, without a doubt, one of the most powerful voices in the music industry. 
Once Upon a Time she dominated the charts and broke several records - Whitney lost her way a few years ago but I pray she gets back to the artist she once was ❤

Much Love and Respect to you Ms Whitney! 

We need to embrace our Legends while we still have them!

SPOTLIGHT: MADONNA

To say I love Madonna would be the understatement of a lifetime!! I LOVE her!! She does NOT care what people think and I admire that about her.


In the 80ies, when I first discovered her - she was everything I wanted to be - beautiful, sassy and very original. Im sure many a teenage girl in the 80ies wanted to be the Material Girl! She challenged all the notions of what a female should act liek in the music industry - she did her thing her way and did not stray from that for even a second of the years. 


Over the years she has become a true entrepreneur and has made millions and millions for herself through her talent and smart business sense! She has her hands in a great number of ventures and is still raking in the money, I Say - Good On Ya Ms Thang!

R Kelly has been seducing us with his music for a few decades now and for me, he one of the most sexiest singers every - by that I mean the music, his voice is very sexy lol
Needless to say - R Kelly is also a legend and deserves some props!

SPOTLIGHT! Exposing Canada's Talent

The first Canadian Idol brought a lot of talent from this region out in the spotlight. Good or bad - hundreds of thousands of people threw caution to the wind and tried out to the First Canadian Idol.
Among them was a young black man from Nova Scotia named Gary Beals.
Gary was one of the last two people in the end and the last show was awesome - I thought for sure he would win, we are so proud of him here. This guy is super talented. Gary didn't win Canadian Idol unfortunately and I'm wondering WHY no one has saw the potential in him and helped him to the rise of stardom...? We love him here in Nova Scotia and I'm sure he has many fans across Canada and maybe a few in other places but I wish for him to be discovered by someone who can help him polish what he already has. This man has a god given talent to sing and after watching the video I hope you agree!




This song has a techno-ish beat and is VERY dancable. His voice is strong and the song is quite catchy!
