Cee Lo Green: I was afraid of Thriller

Cee-Lo Green thinks he’s a successful musician because he managed to conquer his fear of ghosts.

The 36-year-old is thrilled with the course his career has taken, and can’t wait to perform at the Grammy Awards alongside Gwyneth Paltrow this month.

However, things could have been very different for the star because as a child he was crippled by a fear of spirits. His phobia was so acute he found it difficult to listen to Michael Jackson’s album Thriller – the promo for the title track saw Michael dancing as a zombie – although with hard work he eventually overcame the problem.

“I was terrified of [the record]. I believed in spirits and the supernatural as a kid, so to see Mike as a monster was a frightening image. The reason I’m fearless as an adult – and as an artist – is because I had to get over that fear,” Cee-Lo explained.

“With that being said, this album was a triumph – memorable song after memorable song. I would look at Michael’s illustrations on the liner notes and think, ‘Damn, Mike, you’re an artist through and through.’”

As a teenager Cee-Lo was into hip-hop music. He has particularly fond memories of Dr. Dre’s record The Chronic which was released in 1992, as it reminds him of fun times with her friends.

“I was in ninth grade when this came out, I had just started to smoke weed and this was the perfect soundtrack to my delinquency,” he laughed to Q.  source
